I asked OpenAI GPT 3 in the playground to write a story about anything it wanted and this was the result, I later switched to using chatGPT to write the chapters as I found it easier to work with for it.

I deliberately didn't want to refine or adjust this story but just let it write as is to show that side of things first.

I would write such a story very differently, to be fair here the story as produced by chatGPT is still very much an overview which perhaps if we were to ask it to refine and write more on each chapter might lead to something better.

It lacks something in terms of plot and action also, the idea of an alternative team who want to get the artifact to use for personal gain and power could be a good plot device which if properly explored, and might have led to several interesting twists, as they race to find it with confrontations etc, and even perhaps in introducing more about the powerful and corrupt organization that seeks to use the technology to gain ultimate power and control over the world, who they are, why they are involved/interested, adding a conspiracy or traitor in the teams ranks and so on working for the corrupt organisation giving rise to a possible hero arch?

The artifact itself again could have led to a whole load of interesting things as it is described as a "gateway to other worlds and dimensions, with the potential to unlock unimaginable knowledge and power" there is obviously much there which could be explored and developed upon, itself, the race that made it, why, what happened to them, the other worlds and dimensions, etc and such again would probably shape the direction of the story differently as well.

There is also the question of why is it at the bottom of the sea? As it's of alien origin did it crash there? Is it a space ship? Maybe part of some ancient alien complex linking worlds and dimensions etc again there's a whole lot to explore there and you could of course even tie that in with myths and legends perhaps like the lost city of Atlantis for example, though I would say stuff like that has already been done to death in SciFi things like Star Gate so personally I would try to avoid that, you could perhaps go for a more sinister plot with such in a fashion more akin to something like the SciFi film Prometheus or indeed follow the individuals of the team as they explore it more closely etc.

There's again a potential in terms of plot to introduce a kind of sting in the tail there which could be developed throughout the story and would change the ending, for example maybe the team would decide to use the power of the artifact to go back in time and never use it's power in the first place, destroying it so others couldn't either, to avoid these consequences, maybe the consequences were what led to the destruction of the alien race which built it, perhaps it created a new dimension similar to theirs but different in some fundamental way etc again there's lots you could do and explore with this.

I have to say in much a similar fashion to what other people have noted about works chatGPT has produced before in regards of technical questions there is something "matter of fact" in the content it generates, and I feel kind of like in this way here it fails to draw the reader into the story or make them care about the characters.

It feels more like a good starter template than a complete story to be honest, and as an experiment perhaps is a good way to generate new ideas off the back off it?

Personally I liked the premise of this story though and the idea that an alien artifact which is a "gateway to other worlds and dimensions, with the potential to unlock unimaginable knowledge and power" is found under the ocean, there's a lot I could write from that as a story, although it would be very different I think to what chatGPT produced here itself.
